ZyGwai Delight: Miva Star of the Week

It’s our first Miva Star of the Week edition for 2025! We are thrilled by the enthusiasm and engagement from the Miva community. Our very first Star of the Week for this year is ZyGwai Delight, a dedicated student from the September 2023 cohort (the very first cohort), studying Public Policy and Administration.

In this interview, ZyGwai shares insights about her academic journey, balancing work and studies, and her passion for sound engineering and travelling.

Meet ZyGwai Delight

Honestly, this is our first time debuting Miva Star of the Week in this manner, and we are very happy. We’re also glad that the community is engaging and taking it as seriously as we are.

Please introduce yourself.

My name is ZyGwai Delight. I am part of the September 2023 cohort, studying Public Policy and Administration, currently in my 300 level. Thank God.

Where do you reside here in Abuja?

Apo Legislative Quarters.

I want to ask you a couple of questions, but let’s start with something personal. Who is your favourite musician right now? What’s your favourite song at the moment?

Billie Eilish. One of her most recent songs, Birds of a Feather. I’m trying hard to stop listening to music.

Interesting. Can we know why?

Even movies; I hardly watch movies. I’m working in a place where I’m constantly surrounded by music.

So tell us where you work; maybe that will give us more insight.

I’m a sound engineer at Apple Music School and Studio.

Oh, that makes a lot of sense! So you’re tired of… I get it now.

Hobbies and Passions

As a sound engineer, what are you truly passionate about? Is it audio and sound production? What sparked your interest?

Sound and production started as a hobby, but my biggest passion is travelling. That’s why I chose Public Policy and Administration—if I get a good job, I’ll be able to travel, be an ambassador, and see the world.

That’s amazing! What sparked your love for travelling?

I moved around a lot while growing up and schooled in different states, so I got used to it.

Studying at Miva

That’s interesting. I think you’ve touched on this a bit, but why did you choose to study Public Policy and Administration at Miva Open University?

Firstly, looking at Nigeria today, we lack good policymakers. I want to help change that. Since I love travelling and talking to people, Public Policy and Administration was the closest fit when International Relations wasn’t an option.

Why did you specifically choose Miva Open University?

Because it’s flexible. I’m working and running my own business, and I don’t have to sit in a physical classroom and wait for a lecture to come to class.

That’s great! Now, in your studies, what’s your favourite course so far?

At the moment, I have two, but one of my favourites is International Administration. We’re currently studying border security and how to interact with other countries in a way that benefits our nation. It has also made me think about expanding Nigeria’s exportation instead of importation.

That sounds very interesting.

There’s Still Community!

Have you been able to make friends at Miva? There’s often a misconception that online learning is isolating.

Well, I have a lot of friends! Shout out to Ella, Khalid, Trust, Kemi, Rich, all the Davids and Daniels, Sam, my sister Eired, Amina, Abdullah, Braveheart, Supreme… They are a lot.

Wow. It seems like you’re not missing out on community. Do you have a study group?

Unfortunately, no. I prefer studying alone.

Is there a particular reason?

I just prefer reading on my own, and my friends and I are not all in the same department. So to avoid confusion, I prefer studying alone.

That makes sense.

Work-Study Balance

You mentioned that you’re a sound engineer. How do you balance working and schooling at Miva?

I have a structured work and study schedule. My job starts at 9 AM, but on Mondays, I arrive by 8:30 AM for meetings. I work until about 2 or 2:30 PM, then leave for class from 2:30 to 5:30 PM. When I get home, I study at night.

We love understanding employers! Have you faced any challenges with online learning, and how have you overcome them?

Discipline is key. With online learning, it’s easy to get distracted. To stay on track, I set phone reminders for my classes, assignments, and deadlines. That keeps me consistent.

That’s a great approach! What advice would you give to prospective Miva students?

I’d tell them to join Miva because of its flexibility. You can do anything. You can study from anywhere—China, India, anywhere! We also have understanding lecturers, top-notch success advisors, and a safe campus environment. It’s a great choice.

How would you describe Miva Open University in one word?

Flexible and creative.

Financial Planning as a Student and Entrepreneur

Our audience asked: What’s your biggest challenge as a student and entrepreneur?

Funds! But you need to know how to manage your finances—dividing my salary or other income between school expenses like transportation and funding my business.

That’s good financial planning. The planning just needs to be there.

It’s even good to be a student and an entrepreneur because your market is actually your fellow students.

Thank you, ZyGwai, for being here and for being our Miva Star of the Week.

Thank you for having me.

ZyGwai Delight’s journey at Miva Open University is a testament to the power of flexibility and determination in online learning. From balancing work as a sound engineer to excelling in her studies and staying engaged in the Miva community, she truly represents what it means to be a Miva Star.

We can’t wait to spotlight more inspiring students in future editions of Miva Star of the Week. Stay engaged, keep learning, and who knows? You might be next!
