Miva Open University to Launch First University-Led MSME Survey Report in Africa

30 July 2025

Lagos, Nigeria; Friday, 30 July 2025 — Miva Open University is set to launch its inaugural MSME Survey Report for the 2025 Half-Year, a pioneering effort that assesses the performance and policy impact on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Lagos State.

The report, which is the first of its kind by a university in Nigeria and Africa, covers insights from 200 entrepreneurs across 10 major markets in Lagos, including Oshodi, Alaba, Idumota, Mile 12, Ladipo, and Balogun.

Dr Femi Akinbola, Head of Department, Department of Business Management and Entrepreneurship at Miva Open University and lead researcher of the survey, said, “There has not been any university [in Africa], despite having a department of business, that has ever taken it to be of importance to [conduct an MSME survey].

“However, the university is expected to be a centre which people should refer to when it comes to knowledge and practical exposure to business. That is why Miva, as a commercially driven and entrepreneurial university, has seen that it’s important to venture into that.”

The report aims to provide policy-makers, business owners, and development partners with timely data on how MSMEs are navigating economic reforms, government regulations, and operational challenges.

Key themes explored include access to finance, policy awareness, market conditions, and business resilience.

The launch event for the Miva MSMEs Survey Report (2025 Half-Year) will take place on Thursday, 7th August 2025, at 11:00 AM (WAT) at the Miva Lagos Study Centre, located at 376 Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba, Lagos, with provisions for virtual attendance via Google Meet.
