Miva Masterclass with Dr. Obadare Peter Adewale: How to Build a Successful Cybersecurity Career

On October 19th, 2024, Miva Open University hosted an engaging event featuring Dr. Obadare Adewale, a distinguished Professor of Practice, for an enlightening discussion on cybersecurity career paths. The session was designed to provide students with insights into the various opportunities within the cybersecurity field and was streamed live for online participants.

Dr. Adewale, with his extensive experience in the domain of cybersecurity, emphasised the importance of understanding the complexities of cyber threats in today’s interconnected world. He highlighted how the evolution of technology has led to a growing need for security measures, noting, “The infrastructure, including TCP protocols, was not designed with security in mind, which has created vulnerabilities that cybercriminals exploit.”

One of the key points Dr. Adewale discussed was the distinction between IT security and cybersecurity, clarifying the different career paths available. He explained that cybersecurity is a broad field encompassing areas such as ethical hacking (or penetration testing), network security, vulnerability management, and digital forensics. “Understanding the difference between IT security and cybersecurity is crucial for those entering the field,” he remarked.

Dr. Adewale introduced a helpful framework for students to consider their strengths and interests when choosing a path in cybersecurity, using the concept of left-brain and right-brain thinking. He explained, “If you have a curious mind, always questioning the norms, penetration testing might be the right path for you. However, if you lean towards governance, risk, and compliance, there’s a significant need for professionals who can standardise and ensure regulatory compliance.”

In addressing the skills necessary for success in cybersecurity, Dr. Adewale shared his three competencies framework: functional competence, cognitive competence, and social competence. He emphasised that practical skills alone are not enough; understanding the theoretical aspects of cybersecurity is equally important. “For you to succeed, you need to breathe in knowledge and breathe out practical application,” he stated, stressing the balance needed in building a successful career.

Dr. Adewale also addressed non-technical individuals looking to break into cybersecurity, highlighting that while technical skills are valuable, there are also significant opportunities in governance and compliance that don’t require a technical background. “The key is to understand your strengths and leverage them to find your niche within the cybersecurity landscape,” he advised.

The event not only provided valuable insights but also inspired students to take charge of their career paths. Dr. Adewale’s journey, from academia to industry, illustrated the diverse opportunities available in the cybersecurity field, encouraging attendees to explore beyond geographical boundaries. “The world is a global village, and you need to position yourself as a global citizen to seize opportunities,” he urged.

As the session concluded, students left with a renewed sense of purpose and direction, equipped with knowledge about the evolving landscape of cybersecurity careers. Dr. Adewale’s expertise and engaging presentation underscored Miva Open University’s commitment to preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.
