On Friday, 21st February 2025, a National Universities Commission (NUC) team visited Miva Open University to inspect the quality and quantity of resources (human and physical) provided for the commencement of the Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Information Technology (MIT).
Once approved, these programmes will expand the university’s School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) to four offerings, alongside the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Public Administration (MPA).

The Evaluation Team
The NUC delegation was led by Malam Abubakar Girei, Acting Director of Academic Planning. Other team members included Professor Azabe Dziki (Public Health), Mrs. Maureen Austin (NUC, Public Health), Professor Aminu Adamu (Information Technology), Hayatuddeen Umar (NUC, Information Technology), and Jamila Dahiru (ODL, NUC).
They were warmly received by university officials, including Vice Chancellor Professor Tayo Arulogun, Registrar Iheanyi Akwitti, Director of Academic Planning Professor Jude Chukwu, Chief Finance Officer Olaide Olusoji-Oke, Chief Content Officer AyoOluwa Nihinola, Chief People Officer Oladipo Olugbemi, Dean of the Postgraduate School Professor Ogwueleka, Head of Department (HOD) of Information Technology Dr. Emeka Ogbuju, HOD of Nursing Dr. Josephine Ibu, Programme Coordinator for Public Health Kator Igbudu, and Project Management Office Lead Oluwaseyi Kupoluyi, among others.

Miva’s Commitment to Innovation
During the visit, the Vice Chancellor presented the university’s vision, mission, and core values, reaffirming Miva’s compliance with NUC-CCMAS standards. He highlighted the institution’s commitment to a blended learning model, as well as its emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion, and STEM-focused education.
In response, the NUC Team Lead, Malam Girei, outlined the commission’s expectations and confirmed that the visit aimed to assess the sufficiency of resources for the proposed MPH and MIT programmes.
The team inspected various facilities, including hardware, logic, and software/cybernetics laboratories; a public health laboratory; multiple recording studios; the learner support services unit; IT infrastructure; an e-library; a physical library; a Guidance & Counselling unit; four lecture rooms equipped with overhead projectors; and faculty offices.
During the debriefing, the NUC team acknowledged Miva Open University’s teaching and virtual learning model as unique and widely accepted. The Public Health evaluation team were very impressed with all of the resources presented to them for the MPH programme.
On the other hand, the Information Technology team acknowledged Miva’s popularity and impact on computing and artificial intelligence.
In his closing remarks, the Vice Chancellor, on behalf of the Chancellor, Sim Shagaya, thanked the NUC team for their professionalism in carrying out their assignment and assured them that the interventions they suggested would be implemented to achieve the best postgraduate education outcomes that are globally competitive.
