Meet Faith Abiola, a software engineering September 2024 cohort student at Miva Open University. Living in Abuja and working as a designer and web developer, Faith is proof that it’s possible to build a career and get a quality education at the same time. He’s one of the few who has found a way to grow academically while nurturing his creative talents.
Faith’s story is one that many working students can relate to—balancing work, studies, and personal interests. But with the right support system Miva provides and the structure he has built for himself, Faith is thriving.

Discovering the Flexible Miva Path
Faith first heard about Miva Open University through a friend and some contacts. Guess what caught his attention? It was the flexibility of Miva’s programmes—something many working adults look for.
“I chose Miva because it was flexible: I could work and study at the same time.”
With an interest in building websites, applications, and tech solutions, the decision to study software engineering came naturally.
For Faith, Miva offered more than just a course—it provided a structure that could accommodate his ambition, full-time work, and creativity.

Managing Work, School, and the Creative Life
Combining work and school isn’t easy, especially for someone deeply involved in creative work. Faith admits the challenges are real. But over time, he has developed the discipline needed to handle it all.
“I’ve been able to discipline myself enough to put my priorities in order so that I can focus on what’s more important.”
In addition to his job as a web developer and designer, Faith is active in creative spaces and values his own space as well. He enjoys producing music, video editing, recording videos, being in creative groups, and organising things. Still, he maintains balance.
Faith has managed to keep his passions alive while staying committed to his education, which is something many learners strive for.
Study Groups and Self-Discipline
While Faith prefers studying alone most of the time, he also belongs to a 9-to-5 study group, made up of students who also work during the day, and this approach works well for him.
“Being part of a study group has helped me a lot. It keeps me connected with my lecturers and fellow students.”
Through his group, he’s been able to track his assignments and manage other important activities effectively.
This balance between group learning and independent study allows him to stay focused and organised while benefiting from shared resources and reminders.
Balancing work and studies isn’t easy. It takes a lot of “discipline, intentionality, and focus”. But with the right mindset, it’s possible to manage everything and still achieve great results.
A Moment of Recognition and Gratitude
As Miva Star of the Week—an honour given to students who demonstrate commitment, growth, or impact—Faith says he feels amazing to be recognised. “I’m grateful for the opportunity,” he said. “I hope many others also get the chance to be celebrated like this.”

To Prospective Students
To anyone thinking of joining the Miva community, Faith offers honest encouragement:
“It’s a great choice.”
He appreciates the ability to manage his own time, stay in touch with lecturers, and grow in ways that work for him—without the stress often associated with traditional universities.
